EXPLANATION BEHIND SLEEP PARALYSIS
Sleep Paralysis is when you’re conscious but can’t move your body.
Sleep paralysis can be REALLY scary but don’t worry it’s not anything supernatural. REM sleep is another name for the state of sleep when you’re dreaming. Muscles are turned off during this time. Usually you’re supposed to wake up after the REM sleep cycle is done, but sometimes people wake up in the middle of it. Because muscles are turned off one can’t move. All the “ghostly presence” felt are all literally hallucinations, conjured up by the part of your brain that still thinks it’s dreaming.
Me and many others suffer from sleep paralysis. And it’s horrific. But remember, it’s NOT real. So next time, don’t be afraid.

I normally leave the medical posts to other people, but I’m reblogging because it was only as a medical student that I learned what this was, and understanding it made a big difference to how I faced it. I don’t experience the hallucinatory type, but since waking up completely unable to move is bad enough, I can only imagine how much more terrifying it is to be seeing or hearing things that aren’t there. It is the kind of thing many people fear to discuss, or find it hard to articulate. It is not normally a sign of serious physical or psychiatric conditions, if you want to know more, here is what the NHS and Web MD say about it. The risk factors can include being young, irregular sleep patterns, a family history of the condition, and not sleeping enough or rare conditions like narcolepsy. If it is really affecting you, go to your doctor, there are things you can discuss to try and make it better. If you are experiencing it, the NHS recommends trying to get enough sleep and setting a regular sleeping routine to increase sleep quality. Anecdotally, some sufferers report that they are more likely to experience episodes if they sleep on their backs, so sleeping on your side may be worth considering. During an attack, many sufferers recommend focusing on trying to wiggle a finger or toe, or trying to use meditation to calm oneself and focus on other things. Just remember: there is always help out there. You are not alone. And it doesn’t last forever, no matter how much it feels like it will.
